Canada Tries to Stop Flow of Drugs into the US

Canada Tries to Stop Flow of Drugs into the US

As more and more cities and states set up websites and pass measures to allow for importing price controlled Canadian drugs into the US to control the rising cost of healthcare, Canada is starting to take notice on the impact of such practices on it's government run healthcare system. Canada doesn't like what it sees, and for good reason. Canada has a population of around 30 million and is not set up to handle the volume of medications needed to supply a country like the US with it's aging population of over 250 million.

The Canadian Health Minister is considering a number of measures that would severely limit the ability of Canadian doctors to co-sign an American prescription in order to fill a prescription in Canada. One measure would require that the Canadian doctor actually, physically examine the patient before signing a prescription. Canada wants to protect it's cheap medications and realize that if things continue the way they are going, pharmaceutical companies are going to demand price increases, thereby driving up the costs for their own citizens.

What most Americans fail to realize is that the reason medications are cheaper in Canada is because the Canadian government made deals with the pharmaceutical industry to either accept price controls or else they would create their own generic industry and not recognize American patents. So the pharmaceutical industry figures some revenue is better than none and agreed since there were still free markets where they could price their drugs to recoup the R&D costs to develop new medicines. Also, Canadian citizens pay more for their drugs by way of much higher taxes. The current income taxes for Canada are;

Federal tax rates for 2005 are:

16% on the first $35,595 of taxable income;

22% on the next $35,595 of taxable income;

26% on the next $44,549 of taxable income; and

29% of taxable income over $115,739.

And Provincial / Territorial tax rates (an example) in New Brunswick

9.68% on the first $32,730 of taxable income, +

14.82% on the next $32,732, +

16.52% on the next $40,965, +

17.84% on the amount over $106,427

Not to mention the higher sales tax paid by Canadians. So if Americans think that government run and/or subsidized healthcare would be cheaper for them, they should look at the real cost to run the Canadian healthcare system.

Eminent Domain Suggested as Cost Saving Measure in DC

Eminent Domain Suggested as Cost Saving Measure in DC

Washington DC council member David Catania actually suggested that the council should consider claiming eminent domain of certain widely prescribed pharmaceutical formulas in order to help reign in rising drug costs for the city. Catania suggests that the patents should be acquired by the government through the mayor's declaration of a public health emergency and then generic manufacturers would be contacted to produce the drugs for cheaper than they are commercially available.

There are so many things wrong with this proposal that it is hard to decide where to begin. First off, convincing anyone that there is a public health emergency due to the cost of medicines is absolutely ridiculous. The cost of health care does need to be addressed in order for our economy to thrive, but when one breaks down the actual costs of health care one finds that medications account for only 10 percent of the overall health care spending. What would be next, claiming eminent domain over hospitals so the government can set the prices that they are allowed to charge?

Also, what Catania fails to realize is that even under eminent domain claims the government is still required to pay the fair market value to the person/entity that they are seizing the property from, so not only would they need to pay for the intellectual rights to the drugs, the government would then need to pay a generic company to produce and get approval from the FDA to sell the drug which would basically wipe out any savings Catania would hope to realize.

The eminent domain seizure of the patents of drugs would all but guarantee that pharmaceutical companies in this country would have no incentive to develop new drugs, so one hopes that all the drugs required to treat any future aliments have already been discovered. Getting these drugs cheaply now, comes at the very expensive cost of losing any future developments from pharmaceutical companies.

Is it just hubris, or ...?

Is it just hubris, or ...?

In what the Americans love to describe as the war on terror, there have been no clear winners even though it has been physically going on now for over three years. By the looks of it, the tussle between the United States of America and its perceived enemy will outlast the Second World War at least in terms of duration, if nothing else. If so, it certainly represents a horrible scenario for the planet.

What lies at the heart of the conflict between the two sides -- if, indeed, there is a second side to it -- is a total misperception of the other. In the words of the book in hand, Muslims worldwide have been "infected by hatred for the US" because of its "support for Israel, Russia, China, India, Algeria, Uzbekistan and others against Islamists; its protection of multiple Muslim tyrannies; its effort to control oil policy and pricing; and its military activities in Afghanistan, Iraq, the Arabian Peninsula and elsewhere."

On the other side of the equation are the Americans, who insist on taking a simplistic view of the matter; their leadership doing its best to portray it as a worldwide grudge against the American lifestyle which revolves around democratic freedoms, civil liberties, intermingling of genders, and separation of the church and the state.

While the book has done well to point out that the American perception is wrong, and that foreign policy blunders are to be blamed for the situation as it stands today, it has provided a sort of cushion to the American leadership by suggesting that it is taking a fatuous view. However, there are many a Muslim who feel rather strongly that the effort of the American leadership to portray lifestyle grudge as the basis of the whole issue has more to do with political chicanery than with honest innocence. The book fails to take into account this vital factor, but that, for sure, is not the only thing on which it has maintained a discreet silence.

Before moving on to such debatable issues, it is in the fitness of things to have a quick look at the book's raison d'etre and its author. The book is based on all the insight that one can have on the matter while dealing with the mass of background information and latest intelligence that is part of life at the CIA headquarters.

The author was heading the CIA bin Laden Unit in the 1990s before he was removed in 1999, and has since been kept out of the frame as far as the US war on terrorism is concerned. With almost two decades of exposure to issues related with national security, Afghanistan and South Asia, he is still with the CIA, which vetted the manuscript before allowing its publication with the condition that the author remained anonymous. Before the latest title, he had also authored Through Our Enemies' Eyes: Osama bin Laden, Radical Islam and the Future of America. The two titles together represent a rare case of a serving intelligence officer being allowed to comment on government policy; in fact, to be highly critical of it.

Stressing that senior US intelligence officers knew much before the 9/11 catastrophe that "a runaway train was coming at the United States", he has argued that the American leaders "ignored repeated warnings and generally behaved as what they so manifestly are, America's greatest generation -- of moral cowards."

Without directly linking it with his own removal from the key CIA post, he writes, "US intelligence community leaders ensured that most officers who recognised the extent of the threat bin Laden posed before 11 September 2001 were banished to language training, jobs entailing no bin Laden-related work, or excluded from meetings that might afford a chance to present intelligence honestly."

These are strong words, indeed, coming from a serving officer against his own bosses and the US leadership at large. However, he blames it all on a lack of vision, and a mindset that may "protect careers, but does little for our country." Even though he has repeatedly talked about the necessity of understanding the enemy from "his point of view and not our own", the author somehow found it relevant to ignore the sentiment among certain quarters in the Muslim world that more than hubris or a lack of vision, it was perhaps a case of willfully turning a blind eye. After all, the biggest beneficiary of the 9/11 crime has been the US government which has used it as a license to unleash an armed frenzy on the Islamic world.

Besides, the whole world -- including its Islamic component, unfortunately -- blames it all on Osama and Al-Qaeda only, repeat only, because the US says so. The US, on its part, has blatantly refused to share any evidence that it claims to have against the man and the organisation. Why? The book doesn't tell us that.

The author's contention that the hatred among the Muslims is "martial not intellectual" is reflective of his own lack of understanding in this regard. For instance, it is not a martial approach to question the past of both Osama and Saddam Hussein which have linkages to the American intelligence machinery. If they were such bad characters, the US has a lot of explaining to do regarding its interactions with them. Besides, if 'jihad' is such an anathema to the US, why was it promoting that very concept all through the 1980s when it needed blindfolded Muslim youth to fight the American war against the Soviets?

There are several other 'intellectual, not martial' questions in the minds of the Muslims, but the Americans have never bothered to answer them. That definitely is hubris of the imperialistic order.

Interestingly, after a 250-page homily about American foreign policy disasters -- Iraq and Afghanistan inclusive -- and the author's dissatisfaction at it, he has outlined what he thinks should be the future course of action. In a nutshell, he wants the leadership to shun its policy of "cowardice and defeat" and stop worrying about such idiocies as "international comity, civilised norms, and high moral standards." This, again, is a reflection of imperial hubris that the author is clearly suffering from.

Even though the book is a purely one-sided version of the whole episode, readers in the Islamic world will do themselves a lot of good to actually go through the whole text -- which, by the way, includes out-of-context quotations from the holy scripts -- in order to have a realistic understanding of the stubborn American mindset; a mindset that refuses to acknowledge the need to change.

Lack of Peace, Reaching Critical Mass

Lack of Peace, Reaching Critical Mass

You have in front of you two buttons, one is green the other is black. The green button represents peace and love, the black button represents war and hate and you were put in charge of choosing what the rest of humanity will experience on earth. Which one will you choose and why?

New Age authors write that the thoughts of only a few can change the circumstances of the world.

Over twenty five years ago I was taught Transcendental Meditation and during that course we learned that critical mass (the minimum number of people that can sustain a major change) would come when only one percent of the world's population learned to meditate. We understood that this small group of individuals had the power to change the outcome of the world's circumstances.

In the book Edgar Cayce's Millennium Prophecies by Mark Thurston, PhD., Mark suggests that only a few hundred people could achieve critical mass and this would cause the world to experience a quantum change, in other words the thoughts of only a few souls being in tune or harmony with God can bring peace and love to the world. As these souls raise their vibrational levels, others will automatically raise theirs by proximity as a single virus introduced into a cell can affect the whole body.

I would like to go all the way and say that I believe (know) that it would take only one soul in harmony with God (creator) to change the world.

For as many souls that we now have on this planet approximately 6 billion, there are also 6 billion different worlds existing in the same time and space. Each of us is experiencing and creating the circumstances of our existence in these physical worlds. To say less of us is to say less of the creator and it would suggest that we do not have unconditional love to experience unconditional freedom. The world exists only in our minds and we each choose individually how we are going to experience it. Thought, word and deed brings into physical manifestation which we want to experience.

We are all connected to the power that creates the world we wish to experience. Everything that is physical is drawn to us so that we can create our own world. It is not so for fetched if we consider that we live in an illusion, physical material is the densest form of light and is a projection of our own thoughts. We agree on certain things at a subconscious level of thought because the illusion is shared between souls, we assume consciously that we are experiencing the same world as one.

Peace cannot be experienced by trying to bring peace to the world. It can only be experienced by knowing that there is already peace. The road to peace starts in your own world, the one that you are creating. In all that you know, you must know peace first in order to experience it. Peace must be your experience; you cannot know peace while you are experiencing war or while you are fighting for peace. You cannot love while you hate and you cannot be for peace while you are against war. No war can be about peace. War is at the opposite end of the two ended stick; to know love you must move towards love and away from war. War simply means that there is less peace, in truth love is all there is.

In all that you do, you must do it peacefully. Create peace in your mind and you shall experience it in physical life. What you give away comes back to you, and what you hold onto you lose. Give away peace and you will always experience peace.

Do not try to change the worlds of others, but strive to experience what it is you desire for your world simply by thinking about it, speaking it and experiencing it. Give power to that which you are creating, not that which you do not want to create and the fastest way to experience peace is to know that you already have it. Faith, hope, trust and wishful thinking are steps to knowing that you are moving towards peace and that you do not have it yet. It also removes the responsibility from you for creating it.

You must always know that you have the power within self to create what you desire. You must know that it is you that is creating peace because you have the connection to the universal power and the creator responds to your demands, and finally you must know that you are the creator in individualized physical form. You are reacting to your own thoughts about what it is that you want to experience. You have both the thought and the power to experience peace. You are the "this and that," the "ying and the yang," "the giver and the taker," "the peace lover and the war monger." Choose what it is that you want to experience in this wonderful playground that you are creating.

You are the Captain this is your ship, you are the creator and the created. If it is peace that you want to experience, create peace in your life. If it is trying to move a warring world towards peace that you are experiencing, then that is what you have created, and you will never experience peace. Know that it is absolutely appropriate for other worlds to be at war given that we have absolute unconditional love to create our worlds as we see fit. To the level of awareness that we have that war does not work for us, will be the level of peace that we experience. As long as we believe that war works for us, we shall experience it.

If you are wishing for a peaceful world, then that is what you will experience. If you have hope for a peaceful world, that is all you will experience. If you trust that man or God will bring peace to the world eventually, that is what you will experience and that will always happen in the future, you will never experience peace now.

Peace comes now, to those that know they have it. Forget about the rest of the world, it's not going to happen. Experience peace in your mind and your world will reflect that thought. Experience is a thought manifested, you are never a victim of circumstance you are creating it.

To the degree that you know that you have the power to change will be the degree that you will experience change. If you limit your power, you will limit your experience. If you are waiting for change you will always experience waiting for change.

If what I have written is not part of your philosophy you will probably already have a very good understanding of way you feel powerless to change your world. You have no power if you do not claim it. It is you the reader that does not experience peace because you do not know it and you are still searching for peace that is why you are reading this.

Peace is always an individual choice, simply choose to experience it and know that peace is what you represent.

If peace is simply a matter of pushing the correct button, what thoughts are holding you back? There-in is the truth that you seek, the answer to peace.

The Dawn On The Nile Valley Has Secrets To Tell!

The Dawn On The Nile Valley Has Secrets To Tell!

Amnesty International comments on the proposal that has been laid out by President Obasnjo the Chairman of the African Union in regards to the Sudanese Darfurian issue.

The Nigerian President proposed to have an "African Panel for Criminal Justice and Reconciliation" to deal with the crimes committed by the dictatorial regime in Sudan.

Paying respect to some of the African leaders, I think the proposal will undermine the International Criminal Court and protect the impunity of those responsible of the crimes.

Everyone knows that, there´re more than one dictator in the continent right now. Those dictators are ruling their people by iron and fire. It´s more worse there than what it had been during the Fascism period in Europe.

Now with this proposed African Panel, the New Fascisti will have a new lease of life! Ah. That´s very clear, because they will compete to defend each other. Natural. And this will be a miss.

I am calling since more than three years and even before the Darfurian issue, to submit those dictators to the International Criminal Court.

They have committed a well known political crimes not against the Darfurian and the Southern people only, but against the Northern people as well.

If the memories are too bad to remember, go a head and search for the political crimes committed by the first dictatorial regime in the Sudanese modern history during 1959-1964. Then of those committed during the second dictatorial regime during 1969-1985.

Then come to the worse and worse of those who are ruling now since 1989. Then you probably will know who makes the devil itself a devil!

If the memories are too weak, the history is not.

The rebels are not innocent too. Just go to the jungle there and investigate; and do more investigation in Eritrea too.

The dawn will come with great stories for the new Sudanese generation to read and take leasons.

Secret Clandestine Facial Recognition Countermeasures and The Future of the CIA

Secret Clandestine Facial Recognition Countermeasures and The Future of the CIA

Presently Universities and Private Enterprise are working to build more robust "Facial Recognition Technologies" due to the Homeland Security Funding for such research this field continues to grow. Anti-Terrorist efforts are a worldwide goal, so we are sharing this technologies with allies for use in their countries. These new technologies will also end up in the hands of our enemies or perhaps future enemies. Such hostile nations towards the US with such recognition software may prevent our clandestine spy efforts abroad. Getting our assets and spies in country can be difficult and history has shown that it takes much secrecy and effort to get in, get information and get out without detection.

Hostile nations will consider our spy efforts in those countries as International Terrorists, much the same way as we see their spies who come to our country if and when they are caught. Such Facial Recognition and software equipment will therefore be readily deployed to detect our infiltration efforts and exploitation of their systems. Since we have now invented this technology we need to find a way to beat it when, it is used against us by our enemy.

The United States allows citizens form other countries to attend our Universities, which do intensive research in these areas "human recognition" and that information is being duplicated in their countries of origin. We will explain the most common types of human recognition in this report. Currently Facial Recognition Technologies are not used very often since they are far from perfect and are probably not the best identification device, however the technology is rapidly becoming very viable. Soon such recognition software will be more than adequate for identifying those people we wish to catch and keep out of our sensitive areas.

The CIA has a terrible leak problem with information, the FBI not much better. The FBI has lost some 2000 computer laptops, is now sharing information and data bases with other law enforcement and we all remember the Spy Sex Scandals recently. The CIA also cannot keep a secret, nor can those in Washington who are in the know, as we recently found out with the wife of a Senator being written about in a major newspaper. Then of course there are sleeper sells, deep cover operatives and hackers all waiting in the shadows and gathering information. Once a database of operatives has been exploited or a cover of a clandestine agent is discovered their face will be put into data bases of foreign countries to catch them using such facial recognition and other human recognition software and equipment. Today the problem is not wide spread but the technological advances of mankind are not exclusive to the US alone. So what exactly is Facial Recognition Software and how does it work?

So far the companies promoting their technologies in the Facial Recognition Software and Equipment sector have found killer applications. After 9-11 there has been much money flow for projects, which can help identify International Terrorists. The technology was further spurred on by such big screen movies as "Minority Report" as security professionals decided, wow, now if we had that technology we could prevent an International Terrorist act. Of course free rights advocates cringed and thought of it as a wake up call to what big brother might be thinking about next. Link Discussing Thoughts on "Minority Report" - Movie:

The TSA has approved Facial Recognition Systems and technologies for several Airport Terminals on a trail basis.

Overview of Progress of the TSA Security Screening:

Large Stadiums have also used Facial Recognition Systems to scan individual faces as they walk into the events such as Baseball, Football, Air shows, Shuttle Launch Spectator Areas and even at NASCAR races. As this technology continues to achieve a higher percentage of positive recognition it will be more widely used. We know this will be the natural progression of facial recognition systems because we have watched the growth and refining of other types of recognition software, which are now widely used and considered common practice. Technologies like those used in document scanning, OCR, and those used in Speech Recognition. These are now commonplace business tools used worldwide. Security Professionals are now taking these to the next step and finding ways to use these technologies in Homeland Security, Intelligence and law enforcement. Facial Recognition will also follow this type of growth curb in the next 4-5 years.

Geo Spatial technologies have also gotten better with aerial satellite recognition, able to quickly point out a new building, missile silo, change in landscape from an Earth Event or a truck convoy anomaly in an area where it rarely occurs. These technologies are also used in national security within our borders and law enforcement to a large degree, when prior they were used for only war planning, intelligence gathering and watching mother earth.

It stands to reason then that as similar technologies in recognition get better and better that human recognition technologies such as "human gait recognition" and "human eye recognition" will also become more reliable. Facial Recognition is within this class of rapidly coming of age human recognition technologies. Our Intelligence Communities including the clandestine departments of the CIA will need to figure out how to protect their agents and fool these systems long enough to get in safely, collect human intelligence and get out undetected.

In prior periods CIA clandestine operations use an array of various methods to conceal identity of agents, operatives and assets. They often used movie industry tricks like make-up, eyeglasses, fake mustaches, and wigs. They put rocks in their shoes to cause a walk which stood out and which caused observers after the fact to remember the limp rather than the face or tell tale features, which might easily get them caught. (Rule Number One: "Don't Get Caught"). Unfortunately these techniques in the Spy Book Manuals may not work, as human recognition software gets better.

The human facial recognition software measures distances between features and comes up with percentages of identical matches to these numbers. So even if half your face is covered the other half of your face might give you away. Artificial mustaches, fake wigs or mustaches will not work, because they do not change the distances between points on the face, nor are they thick enough to change to stop the scanning if any sort of frequency bounce is being used in conjunction with the system. Any attempt to thicken these fake cover objects will show anomalies in one's heat signature, thus as systems get smarter and start incorporating combined human recognition technologies such as "human gait", "heat scanning" and "human eye-recognition" with advanced Facial Recognition Technologies it will be extremely difficult to fool them.

The fact that systems are unlikely to be fooled is a deterrent which most likely will cause those who are known to be problematic or have been discovered as International Terrorists to look elsewhere for targets and the participants of large events will be that much safer. To fool such systems one will need extremely sophisticated technologies or even complete plastic surgery makeovers or face lifts. This will cause the facial recognition software to further innovate and some young scientists, researcher or entrepreneur will figure out a way to teach these facial recognition systems to look for anomalies in scar tissue.

Scar tissue is easy to spot, expect in the cases of the world's best plastic surgeons. So unless one is using the world's best dermatologist along with a top notched plastic surgeons they will not be able to fool the future facial recognition systems. This will limit the number of recruits to the nameless clandestine CIA spy rosters, because those entering will not only have to ditch their identity like the do in the CIA or French Foreign Legion, but also have to kiss their face good bye, because any photo ever taken in their life with their name next too it can get them caught and killed and all they will have to show for it is another star on the wall. Perhaps ugly people might want free facial makeovers and this might entice them to join the CIA's clandestine Spy division?

Is there any easy solution to this dilemma for our CIA or Intelligence Community? Is there a cheaper way around this? Well the answer is yes and no. Long term, the answer is no, because these technologies will be coming of age and become better and more sophisticated. Short term the answer is yes, there are ways to fool the system now with the present technology, if you understand how the facial recognition software works. As each system is fooled those behind their technologies will work through ways to close holes in the systems. We can see this type of evolution in IT Networks as hackers exploit holes in the computer systems. IT Professionals attempt to create patchware to close those security-breached areas in their systems to prevent further attacks and then the hackers find new holes and exploit those. This analogy works well because it is quite similar, only difference is one is the real world and one is the virtual world. Both worlds matter and they are inherently interconnected. In the future it will be quite obvious just how closely connected they really are.

The movie the "Matrix" might be worth viewing as it seems to help us visualize the world of one's and zero's and the real world we see everyday. As infiltrators try to sneak into facilities, transportation hubs and airports, security professionals will use all technologies available to stop them. Human Recognition and specifically human facial recognition will follow similar paths of evolution, so eventually the systems will not be able to be fooled. Those who count out facial recognition now in it's infancy will eat crow later, just like the nay sayers of previous recognition technologies are looking rather silly today.

One way to close holes that presently exist as these technologies move towards reaching their full potential yet leave us somewhat underwhelmed is to have combined technologies to screen using many different types of human recognition systems, each looking to find anomalies. You maybe able to fool some of the technologies, but you would have to get pretty creative to fool them all. This is part of the strategy at the TSA for airport passenger screening. If any anomalies come up such as metal detector goes off, your ID is suspect, you look or act guilty, you have previously traveled to many states which are known to be problematic, etc then you are taken to another level of scrutiny. The system is not full proof, but it seems to work pretty well, although currently does often impede on personal rights issues. It often judges incorrectly due to programmed red flag anomaly scenarios, case in point would be Teddy Kennedy ending up on a "no fly" watch list. Anyone who has been pulled aside for a further scrutiny or strip search who is merely just a traveling individual can vouch for this. The systems at airports seem to be working well so far and as these new human recognition technologies are added only well financed and equipped people will slip through provided they have some sort of inside connection. Once computer systems are made more robust, human error will be the biggest problem.

It is for this reason that if we truly wish to protect ourselves we must more carefully scrutinize those on the inside at all levels. For instance security guards, police officers, facility maintenance employees, etc. A human recognition system cannot protect you if the infiltrator is merely directed around it. You may recall the shooting where a politician allowed his guest to circumvent the metal detector at a government building?

Now then generally the answer is 'no' there is not a cheap way around all these technologies, but there are inexpensive ways around a few of them. However until these combined technologies, sensors, screening and recognition devices reach their full potential and used together to prevent exploitation of the weaknesses in any one of them, they can be fooled. Many of those inside security audits have shown that one could sneak on a device of some type onto an aircraft or one could get through a border check point. Soon as the systems close the holes, become more robust and are used in combination, it will be hard pressed to beat them.

Currently our clandestine spies can infiltrate the facial recognition systems by using under skin simple devices or strategies, so short term (next 4-5 years) the answer maybe "Yes". For instance plastic Halloween Dracula Teeth, type teeth covers will cause protruding of the facial region surrounding the mouth, simple, inexpensive and it will cause the numeric distance between facial features off.

Chewing Tobacco is another simple easily deployed strategy to fool facial recognition systems since it will cause lower jaw distance to be slightly off the measurements. If you have ever noticed someone was chewing tobacco, you might have thought something was not right, but did not know what it is until they spit.

Someone going into a baseball game while chewing tobacco would not be an unnatural event. It would not be out of place at any sporting event, truck weight station, border crossing, rodeo, outdoor celebration, etc. Chewing Tobacco however would be questionable at an airport and create an anomaly. With practice, those who often chew tobacco in small amounts can talk and chew without detection although even chewing tobacco does have an odor. So a combined recognition systems for detection could be "human plume technologies" to prevent this from not being detected, thus could red flag that anomaly and help you catch the infiltrator. Since the facial recognition software measures all portions of the face for eyebrows and eye regions, small "Botox" injections can radically change the distances between features in that region of the face.

Nose plugs used by used by some emergency first responders in a slightly smaller form will cause the nose to look different to a computer and throw off the readings of facial recognition software for that central region of the face. These of course are cheap and inexpensive ways to slip in and out of choke points, which have facial recognition software and systems deployed. Eventually the innovators of such technology will close the gaps on such clandestine disguise tactics and methods and prevent the easy fooling of these systems. In the United States we have the homeland security dollars already deployed and entrepreneurs across the land have taken up the challenge to build a foolproof system, they have come a long way, but still have a ways to go.

Since International Terrorism is a worldwide problem these technologies will be exported to other nations, which also have similar nuisances or threats with International Terrorism. Rogue nations may also deploy these technologies along with regimes, which wish to control the freedom of their subjects and promote their own Dictatorship Style Leadership. We will be faced with infiltrating these countries and their borders to gain access to information, human intelligence, future hostile intentions and enforcement of international crime, drug shipments, human sex trafficking and military WMD build up.

Our CIA Clandestine units need to have simple ways to fool the newest infant human recognition technologies and commit to a 4-5 year plan to upgrade tactics, ideas and technologies through intensive research to stay ahead of the rapidly increasing use of surveillance robotics, imaging, recognition software and early detection security technologies. Exploitation methods and strategies should be incorporated into our own security technologies on key infrastructure facilities to prevent these our systems for being infiltrated.

Colonel Boyd on Limited War and Iraq Victory

Colonel Boyd on Limited War and Iraq Victory

In discussing the OODA Loop theory on Limited War by Colonel Boyd with in the context and patterns of conflict, it appears that we as a nation have forgotten the other options dictated by previous conflicts in the works of von Clauswitz "On War" in that we are disregarding such options and scenarios entirely. In our attempt to move the human race into a different space we are also changing the theory of war in order to do so. Yet at the same time not admitting that we are not so good at it, as we are led to believe by the academics.

In fact as we see Pentagon employees in the DC Suburbs reading the Koran, Middle Eastern Culture and history books to understand the culture, that culture is becoming more adept at using our wonderful new attitude to take advantage of such efforts and new concepts of conflict. We are seeing the NATO employees in Tucson doing the same thing. We are listening to the powers that be to keep the conflict scaled down, but just enough to operate the war machine.

Hmmm?

By using this OODA Loop theory in it's entirety, we are being manipulated into only choosing certain chess board moves by the enemy (the face-less cowards of international terrorism) and we are not using the whole track, which I might add is the first thing they teach you in motorcycle street racing class. It is as if limited war and diplomacy is being used against this strategy. Yet, at the same time we appear to be allowing these methodologies to the utmost and are failing to act decisively in many instances.

Without such threats of all out war where you annihilate your enemy into oblivion, it is becoming harder and harder to negotiate to fulfill our political will, since the enemy real or perceived does not believe that we will ever use such options. Yet we have an arsenal more than capable of doing so and a quick intense history-making event of the ultimate in destructive power to show strength has yet been seen in the last 5 decades. We are seeing un-negotiable thoughts of our foes, middle fingers high in the air and treaties that these folks have no intention on fulfilling as a matter of fact they are laughing at us and some of the larger more potentially deadly foes in our future are being trained by us and are already finding ways to counter our Future War Strategies of net-centric, blue force tracking and combat scenarios.

Why, because we are teaching them, they are helping us design ours and we are allowing loose lips to sink future ships. When we allow students to come learn nuclear physics, IT, modern materials, fluid dynamics, frequency energies and modern business tactics, they are not going back to their countries to make paper dolls and we both know it.

Thus with this said, the power struggles are lasting decades instead of swift changes to set mankind back on course, including the god forsaken horrible attributes and consequences of nuclear weapons. Surely it is not pretty or even something you want to think about. In Colonel Boyd's model which has since been adopted by our war time leadership observe, secure options and eventually act, we have in fact failed to act and failed to achieve the goals set forth to stabilize regions. Fear Factor is being replaced. We are choosing targets via military lawyers and allowing the same non-reality based thinking which has stagnated American Industry with over regulation and incessant litigation to enter the realm of wartime.

Previously and I can remember my dad an accomplished RAG Wing Fighter pilot serving in 250 combat missions in a jet over Vietnam and also eventually running his own squadron saying the fighter pilot Naval mantra; "Never give a sucker and even break, take the advantage and cheat" reason being; there are no points for second place and in case you don't get it, you are dead if you are not number one.

Mr. Von Clauswitz was quick to point out in the ideas of pre-emption that if you fail to attack your enemy as he prepares to attack you, then you do so at the expense of all you are and all you have built. We are seeing this now. This is not a debatable human trait in the study of war, it is fact of life or death, depending on the way you look at it. It is not Them VS. Us, it is not Conservative VS. Democrat. It just is, and that is the way it works. Although war is hell, and killing one's own species is nothing to be gleeful about, it is a fact of the human kind and probably innate for a reason. And to that end we must also remember that a large statement of power and force will be remembered for a while. We need to make a statement to the world and too the International Terrorists and those who wish to manipulate them to do harm to the American people that we are the United States of America, we are united and be fore warned that this nation is off limits to attack.

The best way to do this is to turn those who might harm us to glass. And let them help their people mind their own business, since it is fairly obvious that the World is once again at impasse as it is caught between fundamentalist thinking and fundamentally that is flawed, not working and unacceptable if we are to move mankind into the future and the next evolutionary step.

In Boyd's model of limited war we are to use normal combat operations to focus enemies attention, extra ordinary actions to keep enemy unbalanced and to believe that the side which has the most accurate picture should prevail? Should have, would have could have. Judging by that basic strategy it appears that we are following the OODA Loop fairly closely. And throwing in a little Sun Tzu's "cheng and ch'i", in that we are isolating our opponent's center of gravity like a teenager who takes Judo. We appear to developing mistrust of our enemy and trying to get them to break ranks and disrupt there system of organization by local and regional non-cooperation, yet while doing so we have fractionalized the enemy and therefore harder to gain access to good Intel.

We have provided increased friction and we have hopes that paralysis will set in and well it has seeing as the conflict is coming to a close and another one and another enemy lurks, so off we go again studying and failing to act, for fear of acting inappropriately. Again, fundamentalism and extremism runs deep along the common theme of the last 5000 years in the culture and we should expect few changes really? Yet we are teaching our enemy as we go. And we need to add many new plays to our playbook ASAP.

"Know your enemy and know yourself and in a 100 battles you should prevail"

Well surely a cute phrase, but actually how about one battle or no battles only one pre-emptive strike. Game over, whose next? No players, good, glad to see you are willing to adjust to our political will, the will of the Modern Free World. Boyd felt that it is better to paralyze your enemy than to annihilate them. Well said Colonel Boyd, now then, if we nuke an enemy for everyone to see then in fact paralyzing your next enemy ought to be fairly easy. On the present course we are seeing guerilla tactics play out and guerilla tactics are very straight forward.

The goal of the guerilla army is to defeat the existing regime, while simultaneously showing the regime does not have the moral right to lead. This is done often in American Politics as we are seeing from George Soro's tactics with a little bit of money in the right places. He is using a similar strategy to the corporate climb the ladder strategies of corporate power grabbing. And to that end these methods are not much different than "Primate Politics" and Jane Goodale can attest to that. Sometimes I think we are giving the human race way too much credit, when in fact the same social hierarchy is not much dissimilar than that of chimpanzees. What is most interesting is that the momentum of one party or group or tribe against the other is easily manipulated by those who study the game. As did Sun Tzu, Colonel Boyd or Carl von Clauswitz.

It is fairly obvious that the guerillas and insurgents once we leave will have little to do, so factions of them will be divided and join the new leadership of Iraq while some will remain in the fray. Either way each time you divide your political opponent on an issue, your competition by fragmenting his market and finding a niche as a foot hold or dividing your enemy you are well on your way to political victory, increased market share or winning the war and all the battles to follow. And although we are allowing the media and the election year sound bytes to make us feel questionable about being an American, I would like to point out we are in a good place in the over all scheme of things. An issue which is undetermined is if the three different sects of Islam can in fact get along or if civil war will erupt once again as it usually does during times of nation building. Will the Iranian Government fall apart or will they try to overcome their neighbor once again. Other government in the middle east are also in somewhat of a disarray. Saudi Arabia for instance and the Royal Family having issues within it's own ranks and with the masses.

Guerillas and also revolutionary components often win by stealth fast tempo strikes (like special teams on a football field although appearing and often less organized), fluidity of action (no bureaucracy to deal with), political agitation and harassing propaganda. So in the news we have clearly seen this all unfold just like described by Boyd. To fight guerillas one must play upon the grievances and appear to be understanding, caring and have empathy for such issues and deal with them through outreach of public. Meanwhile the guerillas will undermine the moral authority and right to rule of the public leadership. A regime or occupier who becomes confused is doomed to these tactics. It is interesting that our own media is suggesting that our leadership is somehow confused? Hardly, after all this is such a repeat of so many battles, conflicts and Machiavellian strategies, that it has been studied to death. And the playbook, well, so similar really, unfolding as it has 1000 times before.

Now as the media says we are cutting and running, in fact we are confusing the guerillas, proof today when a Terrorist Organization recanted and said it did not kill an American Muslim soldier after all. I would say that is proof enough. As the Guerillas try to regroup having been caught off guard twice, once with the early turn-over and again with a new enemy, their own Muslim Brothers, oh no what will they do now? In a disarray, confused, thus time once again on the side of forced stability.

If the guerillas continue to fight the new Muslim Leadership and go toe to toe with their own brothers, they will need to find a way undermine the moral authority of that new leadership and show that it is corrupt, a difficult task, if the media favors the leadership and we simply allow them to govern. There new tactics will have to be hit and run, car bombs, assignations and then re-blend into society while relying on misinformation, deception, etc. Which is a Muslim art all to it's self if you have ever tried to bargain with an open market merchant in the streets of the largest towns in the Middle East.

One thing unknown to the guerrillas is how to deal with the media now that everyone has a TV set. The new leadership only needs their own TV and radio stations, which post community events, messages, school information, health information, etc. to over come the "Mental-Moral-Physical" hold that the guerillas, insurgents and Al'Jezerez has on the people. Not difficult really and then the clerics must fall inline as well or lose support, problem only is speeding up the time table. The new government must show moral legitimacy and a little commanding around of the US Authority might look bad for our TV sets but will in fact show well to the people that the conflict is over and the rest of the minds of the people will be on Saddam's "OJ type Trail" sounds like a soap opera? Y

es, and you would not want it any other way really. I would also like to reference Colonel John Warden's thoughts on the "5-Ring Theory" of limited war. In that Boyd's premise was to physically paralyze the enemy and Colonel Warden's view was to psychologically paralyze the enemy, which is exactly what we do in modern day politics here, we character assassinate people with websites, junk science reports, innuendos, half truths, rumors, lies and continual erode the base of the opposition's support.

Next time we are put up against such a scenario we ought to level the place and forget about all this hard work with tactical nukes or the biggie. If we are desirous of having a limited war, then make it appear slow to advance and drag out the battle in the desert away from urban warfare settings as long as possible. Creating hesitation and slowing the decision making process of the enemy and drawing him into our gun sights and use a multitude of new technologies to pick them off in a long drawn out battle even if we ourselves have to drop in food to keep it going for our enemy? Unexpected various strategies could mean more practice for the next net-centric future war go around, honing our skill for the future and testing new technologies. If we are going to kill members of our own species in limited wars we may as well not make their lives depart this linear time period prematurely in vain. They can all be part of a giant experiment in the future of weaponry.

If we cannot fight a war against guerillas better then perhaps we ought to have thousands of teams of small attack units. In other words join the methods of the guerillas on a play by play basis using the same tactics they are. Can't beat them, join them scenarios. And to that end we must be certain that if they cannot beat us this time that they do not join us and join their own new political leadership structure in the new "Free Iraq" fore if they do they will ruin it from the inside out.

If the guerillas and insurgents tactics and disruptions no longer prevail maybe they will change sides to control the government through it's legitimate process. But if they do and turn it upside down again, then the only way to slow them down happens is to import our onerous, rules, unbelievable bureaucracy and some lawyers to round out a system that will protect the people by slowing down the new government to a snails pace and prevent the government from moving to fast to squash those hard earned freedoms, once again paid for by American Blood. We know this would work because this is clearly what the opposition party is trying to do in this election to the current administration, which is up for re-election now.

In business we call small start up, fast moving companies, rule breakers and big bureaucratic mature companies rule makers. This is very similar to the future of guerilla warfare, only problem is nothing gets done, mankind stagnates, everyone is born procreates and dies and the forward progress of the species is left for a future period. All that might be considered great and less bloodshed during their lifetime. But when we look at the annals of history we see that only one percent of all the people who have ever been born and walked on the surface of this little blue planet stuck between waves of gravity and linear time have ever died in a war. War therefore in the over all scheme of things is somewhat irrelevant and if we were to give it even less credence we might forego the activity all together? Perhaps in another 500 years or so?

Either way, here we stay arguing over means and using instruments of war to serve our political will. It starts with a conflict or controversy, progresses to war and then is turned over to lawyers to carry on the battle indefinitely until which time the civilization collapses under it's own weight and starts all over again under a new name, but similar ideals from whence it came.

You silly humans, it is pathetic really, it is surprising what you will believe and how you keep carrying on like this.

The Politics Of The American Dream

The Politics Of The American Dream

The American Dream is the promise to have it all and enjoy it all. It's been glorified and sentimentalized as a utopian goal not just by the media and Hollywood stars, but also by businesses and politicians, including the President of the United States. But in reality, the American Dream is becoming more and more like the 'Impossible Dream.' Today, many Americans believe that their odds of winning the lottery are better than attaining the American Dream.

Originally the American Dream concept was born out of lack and a genuine need for security shortly after the Great Depression and WW2. Because jobs were scarce, the greatest aspiration for most Americans was securing steady employment and owning their own home. As a result, work ethic and integrity were very strong. The focus was on a wholesome values system, family and community, all of which created pride, real prosperity and real joy. However, over time the same prosperity which resulted from being a nation of producers, also created a nation of consumers, driven not by need but rather by the desire to 'keep up with the Jones's.'

Today, the American Dream is more of a marketing concept, whereby Madison Avenue and government alike, have convinced people that they have to have a certain standard of living (such as a second home, a vacation in Europe, expensive jewelry and other 'toys') in order to be happy and fulfilled. Even the Christmas holiday has lost its original meaning and has become highly commercialized.

In other words, we've been brainwashed to believe that, 'He with the most toys lives,' rather than 'He with the most joys lives.' By taking on even higher amounts of personal debt, Americans are more stressed out and less optimistic and fulfilled then ever before despite their high standard of living. That's because 'toys' (material goods), without purpose and a wholesome values system, only produce an artificial joy that is as fleeting as it is cruel.

The American Dream as we know it, is no longer something that is born out of need and lack but rather out of greed and desire. Therefore, it does not represent the true spirit of America, which was based on perspiration, innovation, risk and reward with the focus on a wholesome values system, integrity, family, community and a strong work ethic.

From an Enron economy and huge government deficits, to our failing educational system and the break down of the family system (where kids are left home alone to grow up with their peers, gangs and TV), practically every facet of our lives is negatively effected by the pursuit of materialism, which is a by-product of the American Dream. In a materialistic-driven society where there is an obsession with fame and fortune and winning at all costs, the prevailing wisdom is to do what's politically correct, rather than doing what's in the best interest of the community. And when the intoxicating love of power overcomes the power of love, it's easy to see why absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The concept of The American Dream (as we know it now) is not only a marketing concept but it is also used by politicians for getting votes and keeping constituents happy. In the cut-throat world of politics where the stakes are high, politicians are driven by their own self-serving agendas. As such, the different political parties have their own agendas when it comes to helping certain members of society achieve the American Dream. The Democratic party on the one hand supports labor unions and union contracts that provide for big wage increases for the common worker so that they can achieve a piece of The American Dream. In so doing, they guarantee work and wages for people who are not necessarily that productive, at the expense of everyone else. On the other hand, the Republican party believes philosophically in the free enterprise system. Their vision is to have an economic system that rewards primarily people who are successful, which means mostly wealthy people, at the expense of everyone else.

In other words, both political parties and the special interest groups who contribute to their election campaigns are trying to achieve the political version of the American Dream for their constituencies at the expense of everyone else. Ironically, both political parties realize that because the pie is limited, making the American Dream a reality for all Americans is virtually impossible. As a matter of fact, most people are kept in perpetual debt their whole lives in order to maintain a standard of living consistent with the new ideal of the American Dream. It's this unattainable dream that drives both parents into the work place, working longer and harder than ever before, which contributes to the ills of society.

So in order to make the American Dream possible for as many Americans to achieve, consumerism had to be created. The point of consumerism is to get people to spend more by going into debt. The logic is that higher spending produces wealth for some people. The problem is that there is a limitation on how far people can go into debt. Eventually the economy becomes a 'house of cards' because it is unable to create 'jobs of value,'(based on producing, creating and manufacturing). Instead more and more jobs are in the services industry, catering to our insatiable need to consume. Eventually this type of faulty economy will result in financial chaos where institutions, banks and even governments fail, as we've seen by what's happening in California.

In the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain, we've been looking for solutions and fulfillment in all the wrong places. The solution to restoring our economy, our failing systems and our institutions, as well as our sanity, is through the spirit. That's because whether we realize it or not, we are spiritual beings experiencing the human experience and not the other way around. As such we were meant and designed to live a life of meaning and purpose by recognizing the unity of life and living in harmony with universal laws that are characterized by integrity and the honoring of all living things. Total prosperity and peace are dependent on the strength of our spirit.

Only when the 'business as usual' type of politics is replaced by business with integrity (whereby the power of love overcomes the love of power) can we hope to see a meaningful and lasting transformation that's also cost effective. Perhaps if we live by the mantra that, 'He with the most joys lives,' rather than 'He with the most toys lives,' knowing that paradise is not so much a place but rather a state of mind, can we once again appreciate the simple pleasures in life while recognizing that indeed the best things in life are free. Now that's the real thing, unlike what Coca Cola claims to have.

And while most of us may not be Lords of the Rings, we are always the Lords of our own earthly destiny. Simply put, we all have the power to create our own destiny through personal responsibility no matter what we've been brainwashed to believe. Perhaps when we reconnect with our spiritual roots, and understand the unity of life, we can finally recognize that we are all connected in the web of life, that whatever effects one directly, effects us all indirectly (the global economy perfectly illustrates this fact). Perhaps then confrontation will give way to cooperation and destruction will be replaced with construction. Only then we will discover that peace is not so much unity in similarity but rather unity in diversity - a diversity that needs to be celebrated. Perhaps as we realize that we are all children of God, we will also learn to honor life and finally experience true and lasting peace and harmony, which inevitably leads to total prosperity for all in a win-win spirit. Now that's something to sing about.

The True Power of Terrorism

The True Power of Terrorism

Those of us hundreds of miles from ground zero sat glued to our television sets with horror and disbelief as two of the tallest buildings in the world slowly disintegrated in a violence of dust and death.

Since that bright September morning in 2001, none of us have felt the same. Undergoing an unexpected and brutal national rape, we shuddered at our own vulnerability and defenselessness.

In grief, anger, and frustration, we gathered our tattered dignity around us and vowed repeatedly that it would never happen again. Next time, we would be ready, we would defend ourselves, we would regain our sense of power and invulnerability. We set out resolutely on the journey to make our world safe again.

Security was tightened at airports, border crossings, ports, bridges, and nuclear generating stations. Laws were passed to abridge civil liberties to better fight those out to hurt the United States. Action was implemented in Afghanistan to find the terrorist cells and overthrow their political supporters. The long-standing conventions of war prisoner treatment were abrogated in the name of national security. Iraq was invaded in a preemptive strike to limit the likelihood of future attacks on American soil.

Where has the yearning for security led us?

We have become the enemy. In the hazy logic of the Patriot Act or ethnic profiling at airports and borders, and the specious arguments supporting the treatment protocols at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, America has bought into the mindset of terrorism.

When individuals are kidnapped, psychologically or physically abused, threatened with pain, rape, torture, or death, they become terrified shells of their former selves. Often, they start to identify with their captors, their wills bent to the twisted but all-powerful logic of their oppressors. The prisoner becomes the kapo and exhibits more brutality than his superiors. This is the true price of terrorism: the response it elicits from its victims.

Since all of us are direct or indirect victims of 911, we all need to guard against the mindset we have assumed. We must ask ourselves about our priorities. Is improved safety worth the price of voiding our civil rights? Is the defense against terror worth the abdication of our humanitarian and ethical ideals? Shall we descend to the degradation and torture of our enemies in order to defend our "superior" way of life?

The United States has always, no matter how misguided or hated its temporary policies may have periodically been, stood as a beacon of freedom and fairness in a world too often enslaved and unjust. It is this beacon, this ideal, this dream that millions of American soldiers, through multiple wars over more than 200 years, have fought and died for. It is too precious to be obliterated by a suicide bomb or hijacked airplanes flying into buildings. It will flicker and die only when the values it represents no longer exist.

It has been imperiled before: in the sacking of Washington, the internal convulsions of the Civil War, the formalized institution of slavery, the destruction of Native American cultures, the seizure of Panama, the machinations of McCarthyism, the dropping of the atomic bomb. Somehow, lady liberty was able to dust herself off and recapture the inspiration and vision she represents to the world.

Now she faces her biggest challenge yet: surviving intact in a prevailing climate of fear. There have been wars before where too many young men died before their time. This time, the disturbed sleep of the watchful, wary soldier in his bivouac has moved into the bedroom of suburbia. We no longer feel safe, agonizing over the vulnerability of our children and loved ones. We watch the danger alerts turn different colors and know that sometime, somewhere, another strike will come.

The long heritage of openness, personal liberties, restraint, innocence until guilt is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, and the willingness to defend those rights to the death, has dissolved into the murk of security above freedom, life above ideals, and apathy above involvement. We invade each other's privacy as a mechanism of defense. We abuse and humiliate our prisoners in the name of preventing their future abuse and humiliation of us. We expand our "no fly" lists to close that traditionally-open golden door. We shut down our borders lest a terrorist lurks among the tired, poor masses.

A post-911-world will never be as innocent as before, no more than the permanent changes wrought by the assassination of President Kennedy or the bombing of Pearl Harbor could be avoided. Reaction to tragic, horrifying events is inevitable, both personally and politically. It is when that reaction becomes the basis for major decisions and colors how laws are interpreted, ethics are enforced, and relationships are developed that we must step back and look at our deep-rooted principles and identify where they have become warped and withered.

It is when we look at the world through the eyes of those who hate and threaten us that we see the true power of terrorism: not to destroy us but to assimilate us. That is when the terrorists will know that they have truly won.

Patriots and Parrots: Imprisoning Tongues in America

Patriots and Parrots: Imprisoning Tongues in America

It can be dangerous to engage in free speech. This year alone, 242 journalists, in countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, have been tossed into jail for their words, and one has been killed.

Here at home, our bodies remain free, but our tongues are imprisoned. As Dan Rather stated after 9/11, "Patriotism has run amok." Reminiscent of Joe McCarthy's "red hysteria," we are told to shut up, salute the flag, and applaud White House policy during this "war on terror." Otherwise we risk being branded un-American.

Political satirist Bill Maher was publicly skewered and lost his show "Politically Incorrect." The Dixie Chicks were plucked off the radio, and a 33,000 pound tractor was used to crush their CDs in a public protest. The latest casualty in the "word witch hunt" is University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill who likened some World Trade Center victims to Nazi bureaucrat Adolf Eichmann, and who may lose his tenured position as a result. A number of journalists in America have lost their jobs.

Rather than examine the flaws or merits of their controversial speech, I will present three questions for further reflection.

First, is it patriotic to parrot the cheers choreographed by a Commander-in-Chief? Or was Thomas Jefferson correct when he wrote, "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism"?

If one believes our nation's policies to be in error, isn't the path of courage to speak out, the path of cowardice to remain silent? Should one go down with the Titanic, if one may have a strategy for keeping it afloat, regardless of how much it might inconvenience or enrage the other passengers? Is it possible that those who have been demonized for uttering so-called seditious words are in some way assisting our country, whether for right or wrong, giving us a perspective that we may have otherwise overlooked?

Perhaps the freedom of speech amendment is First because the ability to speak openly is largely what it means to be American. The paradox is that the most outspoken polemicist can be both courageously loyal and yet demonized as a traitor. In fact, two true patriots can present diametrically opposed arguments at the same time. Parrots, on the other hand, have only one general line.

Secondly, is the "war on terror" really a war, and how does this impact freedom of speech? Traditionally, wars are armed conflicts between sovereign states; now we have declared war on an emotion, terror. Our soldiers are fighting and dying, but because the war is against "terror," it can never end. Terror, like drugs and poverty, cannot be entirely eliminated. Since the battle cannot end, does our silence never end? Can we never again speak against U.S. policy?

Thirdly, is it possible that slurs directed at individuals for their "lack of patriotism" are nothing more than political maneuvers, meant to gain power and discredit one's opponents? Democrats also use this tactic against Republicans, such as when Michael Moore said, "They are not patriots. They are hate-riots."

Yet, Republicans are viewed as the more patriotic party, thus enjoy greater success with this marginalizing technique. We should beware of suspicious labels and partisan motives that relegate ones political adversaries to the enemy's cave, to a conspiratorial pact with Bin Laden.

For each individual whose speech is targeted, there are no doubt hundreds, if not thousands, who censor innovative thoughts before attempting to offer them in the marketplace of ideas.

The next time you hear the word "unpatriotic" or "un-American" tossed about, do not accept. Question. Think about censorship and self-censorship. Think about whether you want our country to have a staple menu of bread and water or one listing many flavorful dishes.

Think about whether you believe in Voltaire's idea, "I may disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" or Ari Fleisher's idea that all Americans should "watch what they say" in this time of crisis.

Think about whether you want a land of parrots or one of patriots.

From Democracy to Omniocracy

From Democracy to Omniocracy

Clint Eastwood recently plunged into the murky political pond with his statement, "Extremism is so easy. You've got your position, and that's it. It doesn't take much thought. And when you go far enough to the right, you meet the same idiots coming around from the left."

Is it easy to be an extremist, and is the political scale truly circular, so that the "far right" clasps hands with the "far left"? Does the left-right continuum serve as a constructive paradigm upon which society can be structured?

Today's "extremists" are in good company: Jesus, Martin Luther, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Baruch Spinoza all bore this label at one time. Jan De Witt and his brother Cornelius-17th Century Dutch politicians-were hacked to death by the populace, largely due to their "radical" and "unsavory" political perspective. Their crime? They were proponents of democracy. Their body parts were displayed in storefronts all over town.

Who shall we call extreme? The vigilantes who did the lynching? The shopkeepers who showcased the body parts? Or the De Witts with their pro-democracy stance?

Do "extreme" beliefs emanate from a mechanical thought process, as Eastwood suggests, rather than an intense philosophical journey? It arguably requires reflection and hypercritical analysis to defend ones theories against the cloned, echoed and mass produced opinion of the common folk; it requires conviction to risk social ostracism and other forms of retaliation.

The "approved" or popular view is more likely to be perfunctory. Why think when one can plagiarize? Why go out on a limb when one can cling onto the tree or never climb in the first place?

Eastwood may view those on the "far right" and "far left" as moralistically shrill, as manifesting a tone level of fear and anger. Perhaps this is how the "right" and "left" overlap or come full circle in his mind. But this is a gross generalization, since the "extremes" are subjective and the political continuum fallacious.

Suppose we accept the commonly accepted paradigm of a left to right political continuum, as Eastwood offers. If we define the "left" as the group that protects the voiceless, the powerless, and the forgotten, then the natural progression would be to protect the truly voiceless - animals and nature.

Nonhumans are excluded from our political system, without representation. They have no standing in court; yet corporations do. In fact, nonhumans are virtually omitted from the conversation in our anthropocentric and speciesist society.

A move "left" arguably means to move away from Democracy--which is really just a rule by the elite (humans)--to an Omniocracy (which I describe as a government of, by and for all living beings). The European Union has added nonhumans to their Constitution, as have Switzerland and Germany. New Zealand, India and Reggio Emilio, Italy have outlawed using animals in ways we normally think acceptable in the U.S. (boiling lobsters alive, keeping fish in small bowls, vivisection, etc.).

We are trailing behind other nations, but it would be difficult to sell a Constitutional amendment to our "What's the Matter With Kansas?" country at this time. It would be easier to convince certain states. You may be thinking what would stuffing a few extra words in a state Constitution really do. Well, words are a powerful tool and an important start.

Lastly, does this move to the left spit us out on right? Probably. One could argue that traditional "right" politics prompts a gap between the rich and poor, thus culminates in the rule by a few, such as corporations. To implement policies that foster the idea that nonhuman species have value "in and of themselves," a "top down" government or rule by a few (although not corporations) again seems required.

People are self-interested (as are all species) thus cannot be expected to vote against their desires. Legislators, however, are different (or should be) because they attain self-worth from helping others, being fair and inclusive, and consulting the "big picture." There will naturally be conflicts of interest between species and individuals; but government's job-in an omniocracy as in our current system-- will be to mediate and arbitrate these "disputes."

We are taught democracy is the most inclusive, just and beneficent political system in the world. It is time to re-evaluate. Successful ideas advance through three stages: first ridicule, then discussion, finally adoption. I say we begin the discussion to which Eastwood's words have provided a starting point.

Politicians Are Like Car Sales People

Politicians Are Like Car Sales People

Well, another election has come and gone in the US and no matter which way you voted there are some important marketing lessons to learn.

First, you need to put aside the campaign rhetoric and focus on the strategy and tactics and there are a number of clear winners for both sides.

The Dems and the GOP

On the Republican side. The tactic to put the question of Gay Marriage as a referendum in 11 battleground states was a master stroke. Get people to vote on the small issue and they will follow suit on the larger issues.

It's like selling real estate. Top real estate sales people don't sell houses. They sell a room and the rest of the house goes with it. They look for potential client reactions to a room they see and zoom in on that. If they sell that room to the prospect, then question of getting them to sign a contract on the house becomes as simple as, "Your pen or mine?"

How can we apply this to selling a product or service on the internet?

Look for the most important benefit you offer and build your heading and sales letter around that. Sure there maybe other benefits and you need to highlight those further down the page, via bullets, but focus your sales message on the primary unique selling point.

As a famous direct Marketer, Seth Godin, once said, "One monkey, One banana." Most people have the attention span of an African gnat. Try to get them to focus on more than one thing at a time and you will lose them and the sale.

On the Democrat side, the decision to make the war on a Iraq a central issue was an equally powerful strategy which may explain why 55 million people voted for the Democrats.

It was thought by the pundits that this was playing to the Republican's strength, but this was true only as long as they could make it central to the war on terror.

The moment the Democrats were able to separate the two and make it a referendum on Iraq alone, it became a winner for them, especially in light of the 911 Commission report, which showed clearly, no wmd and no direct ties to Al Queda.

What can we learn from this?

Know your competition, know their strengths and weakness and clearly explain how their weakness are your strengths.

The way you do this is to create a powerful USP (unique selling point). Something about your product or service, or what you do that makes you stand out in the crowd. Something that sets you apart from your competition. Something you do much better than them.

Focus on this single issue and drive it home repeatedly to your website visitors, ezine readers and existing customers.

The other lesson to be learned here. Don't believe everything you read, hear and see. Both elections and the internet are full of people's opinions. Do your homework, look at both sides and above all use your mind and think.

Try to analyze your ideal customer. Picture in your mind who they are, what they are like, what their financial status is, have they bought similar products before. If you don't know who your target market is, how can you target them?

In the late 1990's the principle of the Harvard Business College outlined his belief as to the reason business exists.

The purpose of business is to: KEEP & GROW customers.

We looked at this and thought this definition was too narrow. We felt that in order to keep and grow customers, you first had to find them so we added the word find to the above formula....

The purpose of business is to: FIND, KEEP & GROW customers.

But this still wasn't enough because what if the customer was wrong for your business, that is, they couldn't afford your services or product?

So we added, the right kind of customers, and we ended up with a new formula to work with.

The purpose of business is to: FIND, KEEP & GROW the RIGHT KIND of customers, everything else is rubbish.

If you market or sell anything on the internet, either as a business owner or a reseller, you are in business for yourself and you MUST think of it as a business. Do your homework and your research. It pays off in ways you only dream of right now.

Delta

Delta

As you know Delta Airlines is close to bankruptcy. Their income is less than their outgo. They are running out of money. In order to stay in business they must either take in a lot more cash or cut expenses. In today's economy they cannot raise their fares as they will sell even fewer tickets because competition is fierce.

If you can't take in more money the only alternative is to cut internal expenses. The first to go are the non-operating employees - the little guys on the ground have the smallest paychecks and are now doing the jobs of those who were laid off. That leaves us with the aircraft mechanics and pilots.

Of course the plane is not going to go anywhere without them, but these are the highest paid people in the company beside the executives. The bosses have said to the pilot's union either take a pay cut or we go out of business and you have no job at all. The unions know you can't get blood out of a turnip.

What has all this got to do with investing? I won't buy Delta stock now as I don't know if they will be in business next year. No, but I want you to keep this in mind as we look at the budget of the United States. Uncle Sugar is now spending way more than he is taking in in taxes. The politicians want to increase the payout for Medicare and protect (?) Social Security. These are both threatened even though they tell us they won't touch them. Doesn't this sound something like Delta Airlines?

There is not too much difference except Uncle can keep printing money out of thin air. (That's what the Fed does.) As this goes on and on it means that every dollar we have is becoming watered down. We call it inflation. It is really a hidden tax.

Some time out there in the not too distant future those guys in Washington are going to tell us that YOU are going to have to take less benefits in Social Security and Medicare among many other things. "They can't do that!" Oh yes they can! It either that or you will see your savings disappear right before your eyes called inflation.

Politicians keep promising more "entitlement" programs and these are slowly strangling the country. Many of the European countries are trying to cut back on their give-away programs, but the people vote out the politicians who want to balance budgets until some day the economy will vanish just as the Weimar Republic did in Germany. Everyone goes equally broke.

About 50% of voters don't pay any income tax at all and they don't care. All they know is that some smooth-talking politician is promising them more.

As a voter you have to begin to understand that you cannot have your cake and eat it too or like the Delta pilots you won't have any airplane to fly.

Bodyguard Training in Mexico; My Experiences While Providing BG Training in Mexico

Bodyguard Training in Mexico; My Experiences While Providing BG Training in Mexico

Mexico the country of Salsa, Tortillas and Corruption; I first arrived in Mexico City in February 2002 as an instructor for the WFB - the World Federation of Bodyguards. A Mexican security service had contracted Anders Sorenson, the Norwegian WFB instructor and I, to set-up a training program for BG's in Mexico.

I came through customs and the weapons search, shaking my head at the Mexican officials who only spoke Spanish, making my visa interview a complete waste of time.

That was one of my first lessons about Mexico; almost all Mexicans dream of going to the US to live however, the vast majority speaks nothing but Mexican Spanish. This lack of English knowledge goes all the way from the basic uneducated labour worker to the university-educated attorney at law!

The Assassination:

On my second day in Mexico, I witnessed a Mexican Assassination complete with a "Hollywood-Movie" car chase. Sitting in our chauffeur driven vehicle, I was enjoying the sights in the city of Morelia, Michoacan, when I suddenly heard the well-known sounds of automatic rifle fire. A few seconds later a Bronco jeep, riddled with bullet holes sped past us. The jeep rammed into a vehicle right in front of us and stopped momentarily. The front seat passenger was hanging half out of the shattered side window, half his head gone with brain mass showing, in the rear a woman slumped covered in blood. Then the driver regained his senses and sped off down the street ramming other cars as he fled.

The sounds of automatic fire bursts came again but much louder and nearer. Seconds later a black jeep sped by, with two shooters hanging out the windows firing automatic bursts from AR-15's. By now, from the rear seat, I was yelling at our chauffeur to give chase and try to ram the second vehicle; however, the chauffeur were paralyzed with shock and did not react, until Anders slapped him back to reality.

When we finally gave chase we just glimpsed the assassins jeep, take a right turn at an intersection 30 metres away. Our chauffeur was whining about it being to dangerous to get close to the assassins, however he managed to give a speedy chase. As we turned right at the intersection we witnessed 10-15 heavily, armed Police officers surround the assassins jeep.

The driver of the Bronco jeep were slumped dead over the steering wheel, he had done all he could to evade the attack site and escape the assassins. Realizing the assassins would not relent, the driver had driven with the horn flaring into the no-parking zone, surrounding the heavily guarded high-security police detention centre, where he knew help were immediately at hand.

The assassination turned out to be a drug cartel hit, the dead man in the front were a cartel leader, the woman in the rear was his wife and the driver was his personal bodyguard. The three assassins were arrested and charged with three counts of murder; they all pled guilty and subsequently each received a 12-year prison sentence, with parole after 8 years.

My real surprise about the assassination was the fact that the assassins continued their attack after the target had evaded the attack-site.

This contradicts all "normal" modus operandi for professional assassins, as giving chase across town exposes the whole assassin team to witnesses and law enforcement. Months earlier, I would have argued that this type of "spray and pray" car chase could only happen in a Hollywood movie.

When I discussed this matter with the CEO of the local TV-Azteca, he told me the reason for the continued attack, was that the assassins had more fear of botching the hit, than being arrested by the police. They knew that their Cartel leader would not accept failure and that he would reward their loyalty and commitment. They received the best legal defence money could buy, bribes to the attorney and judges, grease to the prison guards etc. Eight years in prison was simply not such a bad deal for the assassins! This is a similar situation to what is happening in Russia, where standard CP preventive methods, just will not protect your ass either.

The assassination proved to be a blessing in disguise, at least to Anders and I, who suddenly were the two most "wanted" persons in Morelia city. We had requests and questions about training, coming in from police VIP protection teams and security managers for the filthy rich. The WFB could not have arrived in town on a better day.

Being the flavor of the month:

Everyone in protection and his dog wanted to see what we had to offer in the training field. Everyone was very interested but also very sceptical about our training, the Mexicans are wary off gringos with the solutions to all their problems. Very candidly, they told us that they had "enough" experience with no-good American (US) templates for everything. Our schedule was quickly filled with meetings followed by training contracts.

In the next months we provided training seminars and courses to corporate VIP protection units and various police departments in the states of Michoacan and San Luis Potosi. The Police departments we provided training to included state SWAT teams and Ministerial Hostage Rescue Teams. These courses were hosted by the State Police Academies and we even held a seminar for the Army during Army Day.

Kidnapping Industry:

Mexico has more than its fair share of drug related crime, robberies, kidnaps and assassinations. In 2002 Mexico became the number 1 country for kidnappings, taking the lead over even Columbia, a position Mexico held until toppled by China in 2004. There are currently about 4000 kidnappings a year in Mexico. A report published in 2002 by the Mexican Ministry of Justice, found that former or serving Police Officers were involved in the planning or cover up of 80% of all kidnappings.

Training the Police:

One of the interesting facts about Mexico is the enormous amount of Police Officers pr capita. Even in a medium size state such as SLP there are more than 3000 State Police Officers. Add that on top of a heavy presence of City, Federal and Ministerial Police Officers. For a "European" the shear amount of Police Officers and independent departments are staggering and the jurisdictions are often over lapping and confusing. There are almost zero communication between the different departments and Petty rivalries are commonplace, between departments of the State Police and the Federal and Ministerial Police.

During a course for the Ministerial Police HRT, we had to stop early because the course was held at the State Police Academy, which were shared by State and the Ministerial Police. However the State Academy chief were annoyed with the Ministerial Police and decided suddenly that they could not use the firing range as it was officially under supervision of the State Police etc.

This is one thing foreigners need to bear in mind in Mexico, politics are part of everything and corruption is not a dirty word. Every "chief" were looking for "what's in it for me" and if you could provide him with something he wanted, there were ends to what you could do. Firearms are a very delicate matter in Mexico, only the Police and Army has the right to bear arms. Bodyguards are not officially allowed to bear arms, but if you know the right "chiefs" the law means nothing.

However that does not prevent other Police departments from having a say about you carrying arms. During our third course in Mexico, we were training a Corporate VIP Protection unit of the Industrial Police. The Industrial Police were simply a "name" for a unit sponsored by the wealthy in a certain state; they would hire their Bodyguards and then have them "hired" on paper by the Industrial Police. This way the Corporate VIP protection units could legally carry arms. The Bodyguards would thus receive a salary from the Industrial Police and a substantial cash bonus by the corporation they were working for.

Weapons or rather a lack of weapons:

Another interesting problem in Mexico is the acquirement of weapons as the only "body" who have the legal right to import arms and ammunition is the Army. Even the Police Departments have to purchase or lease their weapons and ammunition through the Army. This unfortunately means that the prizes for legal weapons and ammunition are absolutely outrageous. The Army uses its monopoly to fund its own weapons and ammunition purchases and needs, thus the Army have "free" weapons and ammunition due to the tax they levy on the Police.

One result of this is that you can now see Soldiers brandishing new MP-5s used for guard duty, while the local Police SWAT team are still relying on UZIs and Beretta M-12s. It also results in an outrageously low amount of ammunition allowed for training Police Officers in the use of firearms. The majority of Police Officers fire less than 20 bullets a year and in one state, I witnessed the weapons training and the following weapons certification of Police Cadets, after having fired only 12 bullets from a revolver! More than two thirds of the Cadets did not hit their target with more than 2 bullets out of 12, from a 10 meter distance! After this I was "scared" when around armed Police Cadets, I jokingly told the local Chief of Police, to please not attempt to rescue me should I be kidnapped.

Among the interesting aspects of Mexican "Bodyguarding" we found that the vast majority preferred to stick their gun in the back of the pants, gangster style. And avidly claimed that this was the safest and easiest method of carrying a handgun, however during training courses the guns would be dropping all over the place. The main reason for this is that the Bodyguards are not assigned a firearm, but usually pass it between when changing shifts, thus they are to "cheap" to buy their own holster. We made it "clear" that this was unacceptable and students only made the mistake of "tugging" their gun in once!

Bodyguarding the Mexican style:

Another interesting aspect of Mexican "Bodyguarding" is the fact that many VIPs prefer (demands) to drive their own vehicle, thus the Bodyguards are merely following in a back up vehicle. There were daily stories of smart ass VIPs (usually the sons of the wealthy) simply out-driving the Bodyguards, the sons were of course driving Ferrari's or other sport cars. One Fortune 500 VIP we trained for preferred to drive himself around in a two seat Mercedes Cabriolet, which of course made protecting him hell for the BGs.

Those readers who have access to the first issue of Protection News, can see a picture of the WFB adapting its Embus and Debus training to accommodate the VIP driving his own car. We also found that most wealthy VIPs had a huge luxury bus, which they used for cross state travelling inside Mexico. Due to this we had to improvise and adapt Embus and Debus drills to accommodate this and teach linear assault on busses, during the Counter Assault Team training.

A True Life Experience:

Mexico was a breath of fresh air to me as a European CPO, everything were different from working in Europe and the threat level were far higher and by experience we learned that the BGs can not rely of the Police. The vast majority of BGs and Police Officers I met and trained with (several hundreds) were all highly motivated and good guys, who really wanted to learn. They were all sick with the way things were in Mexico and especially the corruption, but there were little they could do about it. Mexico is truly a land of opportunity for the European BG training provider, as long as you accept the rules of business; "corruption" and status quo. If you want to earn money in Mexico, simply go there on vacation and drop in for a visit, by the VIP security managers and local Police Chiefs and soon you will find yourself immersed in the Mexican BG business.

One night when I was having a drink with a local Police Chief, I complained about the obvious drug trafficking. The chief looked at me and said; when I started this job I got a mail package, within it were two packages, one contained $10.000 the other a bullet! When I asked what he did about it, he quietly said; well I am still here?
